The ONLY way to stay Motivated… Home edition

We’ve been in this for a whole year now… believe it or not. Some of you lucky enough to dip in and out of the office and some are now militant Zoom warriors /long lunch takers. Whatever your situation, if you’re experiencing some peaks and troughs in energy and motivation levels, I’m here to confirm that this is entirely NORMAL.

Here’s a quick guide on the best ways to plough through those dozey afternoon hours, and smash that to-do list, every. single. day

Fill your cup

First things first, take care of number 1.
An unexpected yet warmly welcomed outcome of lockdown, everyone has begun to appreciate the rewards of self-care. So much so, it’s become something of a buzzword among social media fanatics. But how can it help with motivation?

As with anything else, what you put in, you get out. The same rules apply for your body. If you set aside time each day, ideally within some sort of routine, to do something that is just for you. i.e a walk with your morning coffee, yoga or a stretching session just before lunch, or a short meditation moments after you wake up. It may sound trivial but incorporating this into your everyday life will work miracles for your energy levels.

Make time every day to ‘fill your cup’, and in keeping these small promises to yourself, you will start to build self-trust. Which in turn, will mean you will be able to make decisions faster and have more confidence in all other areas of your life!

Eat the frog

This is a small but very significant part of the process.. When it comes to managing your energy levels, if you’re putting something off, and it’s niggling away in the back of your mind, you are likely wasting precious energy. Energy that could be utilised on the task at hand if you simply got the not-so-comfortable tasks out of the way.

When planning your day, prioritise the thing you don’t want to do FIRST, and let the rest of the tasks flow more freely afterwards, because:

“If you’re going to eat a Frog, you might as well eat it for breakfast.”

Quarterly goals

Have you worked out where you want to be in 90 days? Do you know what it looks like? Do you have a target? A weekly breakdown?

Begin with the end in mind. Visualise the end goal, smell it, feel it, hear it, anchor as many sensory inputs as you can. Go further, identify the emotions behind wanting this goal, what will it give you? What will you do when you have it? Who will you celebrate with? The more you can stimulate your imagination of what your goal looks like on a daily basis, the more willing you’ll be to do the difficult stuff.

“If you have a strong enough WHY you’ll conquer any HOW”

Implementing a strategy

Right, now you have a target, which is equally as useless without some sort of roadmap. You need to break this down into smaller weekly and finally daily tasks.

Plough through any resistance you have, and sit down for 30 mins to nail a week by week strategy. At the end of each day, get ready to ask yourself, how well did I do at working towards my 90-day goals today?

For some, this will sound about as appealing as a lukewarm glass of dishwater…But it works. Setting aside the time to set short achievable goals will enable you to edge closer to that bigger dream, and watch that progress in action week by week. Because:

“If you aim at nothing, you’ll succeed every time”
